The late Miss OLIVER

The parish of St Michaels in the Hamlet is mourning the loss of one of the most faithful workers through the death on Saturday of Miss S. A. OLIVER the eldest daughter of Dr J. B. OLIVER of Parkfield Rd. For over 17 years she had been intimately connected with the work of the parish under its successive vicars, the Rev H. Gresford JONES [now Archdeacon of Sheffield], the Rev A. F. THORNHILL and the present vicar. Her Sunday bible class for young women numbered over 100 members, the Mother’s Union grew and developed under her fostering care as secretary and visitor, the G.F.S, clubs, band of hope and services for the children owed much to her loving interest. In the homes of the parish she was beloved by all who knew her and came under her influence. Gifted beyond the average with teaching gifts, valued musical gifts, and wise leadership, hers was a Christian character and influence, which old and young alike looked up to and respected, and the sense of loss which prevails in the parish affords a striking indication of the esteem in which she was held. Last October, at the comparatively early age of 46, and while still full of energy and enthusiasm for her work, she was laid aside by a sudden attack which necessitated a most serious operation after some weeks of intense suffering. Making slow but steady progress in the hospital, the worst seemed to have past, when a further heart attack intervened last week from which she never rallied. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev John EYRE, at 11am at St Michaels, followed by interment at Allerton Cemetery.

The death of Mr William Parkfield WETHERED, a respected member of Liverpool City Council, which took place on Wednesday evening at his residence Redcourt, Carnatic Rd, Mossley Hill at the age of 53, will be heard of with regret. Though he had been in indifferent health lately, his demise took place very suddenly. The seizure which resulted in his death from heart failure took place on Wednesday evening in the Conservative Club, Dale St, and he expired very soon after his removal to his residence.

He was born at Clifton Bristol, in April 1864, his father being the late Joseph WETHERED, a colliery proprietor, who was for many years connected with coalfields in Bristol and South Wales. Coming to Liverpool in 1881, Mr WETHERED was from 1886 to 1890 prominently connected with his father and the late Mr F. H. COSSAGE in developing the then unproved salt deposit at Prescal near Fleetwood, where a large salt industry and chemical works have since sprung up. In 1890 it was acquired by the United Alkali Co, Ltd, of which Mr WETHERED became a director, he also served as a director of the North Western Salt Co, Ltd. He published the WETHERED Compound Division Ready Reckoner, which greatly simplified the calculations of cost sheets. He was a strong Conservative and sat for Aigburth Ward since 1907, was deputy chairman of the Water Committee, chairman of the Allerton Polling District of the Parliamentary Division of Widnes and had been chairman of the Widnes Division Conservative Association for 5 years. He founded the Mossley Hill Conservative and Unionist Club, and jointly with the late Alderman JOWETT, J.P, initiated the Aigburth and Grassendale Conservative and Unionist Club, serving both as chairman. He served in the 6th Lancashire Artillery Volunteers and since the outbreak of war work usefully in various directions, among others, furthering the recruiting scheme of Lord DERBY. He was specially selected as visitor to wounded Ulster men in hospital, and regularly used his own motor for conveying wounded soldiers from trains to hospitals.

Mr WETHERED married in 1897, Edith Margaret daughter of John TEMPLE, of Liverpool, their family consisting of one son, Leslie William Temple WETHERED and one daughter. A service will be held at St Agnes, Ullet Rd at 1.30pm followed by interment at Allerton Cemetery.
